What is Myopia?

Myopia, commonly known as nearsightedness, is a vision condition that affects the ability to see distant objects clearly. In myopia, the eye is typically longer than normal, or the cornea – the eye's front surface – is too curved. This causes light rays to focus at a point in front of the retina instead of directly on its surface. As a result, while close objects appear sharp and clear, distant ones appear blurry.

Signs of Myopia Every Parent
Should Look Out For

Parents should be vigilant for certain signs that may indicate their child is developing myopia. These signs include:

  • Squinting
  • Sitting close to the TV or screen
  • Holding books or devices too close
  • Excessive eye rubbing
  • Regular complaints of headaches or eye strain
  • Unexplained declines in academic performance
  • Lack of interest in visual activities (like sports or reading)
  • Blurred vision
  • Covering or closing one eye to read or watch TV

The Importance of Myopia Management

Effective myopia management is not just about correcting vision; it's about providing a long-term solution to slow the progression of nearsightedness. This refractive error can develop rapidly or gradually, often worsening during childhood and adolescence. If it progresses significantly, it can increase the risk of severe eye conditions later in life, such as retinal detachment, glaucoma, and cataracts.
